Soul Singing

During the week of June 21 to 29, 2009, the Africa University Choir has been conducting a choir tour throughout the nine districts of the West Virginia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. The music of these 14 student singers has been reverberating among the hills of West Virginia. The choir is awesome!

The choir is remarkable for several reasons. They sing with passion, reflecting a deep sense of spirituality. They sing in a variety of languages, such as English, French, Portuguese, and Swahili. They choreograph their presentations, reflecting African rhythms and styles.

The choir is coed, and it is made up of students from various African nations. The choir is awesome, because they sing with “soul” from the very depth of their souls.

The individual choir members have a story to tell to the nations. Their story in part is about the difference that Africa University is making in their life. The University provides an opportunity for them to receive a degree in higher education without having to leave the African continent. One choir member told her story of how she is the first person in her family to go to college.

Prior to singing a selection, a choir member will introduce the song, telling the audience what the song is about. Frequently they end the introduction with the statement: “Be blessed by this song.”

When you hear this talented choir, you experience them as a blessing. Their music is a blessing to one’s soul.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
