A Prayer in the Aftermath of a Mine Explosion

God of all creation, we have not received good news from the officials reporting from the scene of the mine explosion in the southern West Virginia coal fields. We are saddened by the news that twenty-five miners are dead and as of Tuesday, four miners are missing.

Help us to remember that in the midst of tragedy, there is always Good News. We thank you for Jesus who is the way, the truth and the life. We thank you for a Savior who comforts us and heals the sick, and calms those who are in distress.

We are holding on to hope as we struggle with our feelings of grief and sorrow. We remember the words of the poet, who says that,

“Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.”
“Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot cure.”
“Earth has no sorrow but heaven can remove.”

May the families of the deceased miners experience this hope in the midst of their sorrow. Let the families of the missing miners know that you are with them.

We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen
