Preparing for Pentecost

This year, Pentecost Sunday will be observed on May 23, 2009. What preparation are you making for Pentecost? Will you go to church and remember that Pentecost is the birthday of the Church? I hope that you not only will plan to remember, but engage in some kind of preparation for this special observance. What kind of preparation is useful?

“Acts” Two reports: “When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place…All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.” The activity of the Holy Spirit is what made this day distinctive. God was present with the disciples, giving them power, Pentecost Power. They took this “power” and turned the world upside down.

The disciples, and other friends of Jesus, had spent forty days in prayer. They were preparing to receive the Holy Spirit, by talking with God and listening to God. God prepared their hearts to receive the Holy Spirit, by removing their fears and their feelings of unworthiness.

The disciples did not choose Jesus; rather Jesus chose the disciples and they in turn chose to follow him. We are called to follow Jesus, and we must make a conscious decision to follow him. When we follow Jesus, we have access to God’s Pentecostal power. The access key is prayer.

Let us pray for a Pentecost in our hearts, our families and our churches, as well as our communities. Let us pray for the United Methodist Church, its ministries and missions.
