Reflections on Aldersgate 2010

It was my privilege to extend greetings to more than 1300 people gathered in Charleston, West Virginia’s Civic Center for “Aldersgate 2010” [July 14-18. 2010]. This event was billed as a national conference on spirit-filled living; and it did not disappoint the participants. We heard awesome testimonies, inspired preaching, persuasive teaching and joyful singing and praise.

What is Aldersgate Renewal Ministries (ARM)? “The empowerment of the Holy Spirit is essential to carry on the ministry of Jesus. Individuals and churches who are moment by moment filled, gifted, empowered and led by the Holy Spirit will be used by God to minister to the world. The Holy spirit, God’s divine power, has given us everything we need to pray, to worship, to share our faith journey and to heal the sick – carrying on the ministry of Jesus.”

How does ARM go about its ministry? “ARM comes alongside individuals and churches offering equipping ministry in Holy Spirit empowered prayer, worship, faith sharing and healing.”

It was a joy to be present with other United Methodists at Aldersgate 2010 who desire to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, and are seeking to enable renewal in United Methodist congregations. Congregations change to the extent that there is change in the individual members of a congregation. Personal change or transformation is enabled by the Holy Spirit. Changed pilgrim disciples change congregations.

It is the power of the Holy Spirit that enables us to do the work of ministry in our local communities and our world community. We must keep in mind that the mission of the church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Aldersgate is the place where John Wesley’s heart was strangely warmed. Wesley encountered the Holy Spirit in a new and fresh way. His soul was set on fire and the rest is history – our history as United Methodists.

I pray that our souls will be set on fire, and in turn, our congregations will be filled with the Holy Spirit, and set on fire with the Holy Spirit.
