Where is Holy Ground?

Where is holy ground? Your answer to this question will no doubt be guided by your perspective on life.
From a biblical perspective, we encounter a theological description of holy ground. While Moses was tending to his flock in the wilderness, “the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush.” Moses stopped to see the great sight, and to find out why the bush did not burn up. God spoke to Moses out of the burning bush. Moses answered, “Here I am”.

God spoke to Moses: “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” God also said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”[Exodus 3:1-6] This ground in front of the burning bush was holy ground, because God declared it to be holy ground. God was present, practicing a ministry of presence with Moses as he engaged him in a new ministry.
Woody Guthrie’s lyrics, “Holy Ground,” capture the theological essence of Holy ground:

Take off, take off your shoes
This place you’re standing, it’s holy ground
Take off, take off your shoes
The spot you’re standing, its holy ground
These words I heard in my burning bush
This place you’re standing, it’s holy ground
I heard my fiery voice speak to me
This spot you’re standing, it’s holy ground
That spot is holy ground
That place you stand it’s holy ground
This place you tread, it’s holy ground
God made this place his holy ground
Take off your shoes and pray
The ground you walk it’s holy ground
Every spot on earth I trapse around
Every spot I walk it’s holy ground
Every spot it’s holy ground
Every little inch it’s holy ground
Every grain of dirt it’s holy ground
Every spot I walk it’s holy ground

All ground is holy ground because God created the earth and God is present everywhere, especially in the places where God speaks to us.

Some people have said that “ground zero” is holy ground because it is the place where a national tragedy took place. Some folk believe that a Mosque should not be built two blocks from “ground zero.”

Can we mortals place a limit on God’s holy ground, defining it in terms of city blocks? How far away from ground zero is a comfortable distance for a Mosque (community center) to be constructed – three, four six or ten blocks?
Bill Gaither’s lyrics, “We are standing on holy ground,” suggests that we cannot limit the presence of God.

What is holy ground?

Where is holy ground?

Moses was instructed to take off his shoes because he was standing on holy ground located in the middle of the wilderness. God can stand wherever God chooses to stand, and declare that it is holy ground. When we stand in the presence of God, we are standing on holy ground.
Gaither says:

We are standing on holy round,
For I know that there are angels all around.
Let us praise Jesus now,
For we are standing in his presence on holy ground.

Think about it!
