Looking Forward to Easter

I am looking forward to Easter! How about you? Are you looking forward to Easter with anticipation and excitement?

Easter is the day when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. On Easter Day, Jesus conquered death and gave God’s people the opportunity to experience new life. The women who went in search of Jesus early in the morning only found an empty tomb. The joy of Easter was the fact that the women encountered a Risen Savior.

During this Lenten Season, we have had an opportunity to ponder our personal life, with its ups and downs. We have examined our current relationship with God. Such reflection and examination enable us to draw closer to God, because we begin to put our living into perspective.

During Holy Week, Peter had an opportunity to put his life into perspective. He was not as close to Jesus as perhaps he had previously thought. Not only did he deny Jesus, he essentially deserted Jesus – watching from a distance.

Judas had an opportunity to put his life into perspective too, but he failed miserably. Instead of aligning himself with Jesus on Maundy Thursday, he distanced himself and betrayed Jesus. The end result was that Judas took his own life.

The other disciples, all of whom had sat at table with Jesus at the Last Supper, could not be found on Good Friday. They were afraid that they would be identified with Jesus and be arrested too.

Do you ever fail to identify yourself with Jesus, for fear of being known in the community as a pilgrim disciple? I suspect that we all have been guilty of not identifying with Jesus in public at some time or other. I confess my guilt.

But, Easter is coming and God is giving us a fresh opportunity to live as Easter People. I am grateful for this Lenten Journey 2011. In a few days, we will observe Palm Sunday, the day that marks Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Let’s invite Jesus into our hearts and into our churches. Let’s get our hearts and churches ready to receive Jesus. We need Jesus, the way, the truth and the life.
