Easter: The Day of Resurrection

Today is Easter, the day of resurrection, joy, affirmation and faith. God raised Jesus from death to life. When the women discovered that Jesus’s tomb was empty, their fear was soon replaced by great joy. The women went and told the disciples about their miraculous experience, affirming that the tomb was indeed empty. It was Mary Magdalene who went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord.” Among other things, she told the disciples what Jesus had said: “but go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God’.” [John 20:17, 18]

John of Damascus declares the victory in his hymn, “The Day of Resurrection.” Ponder the text [“The united Methodist Hymnal,” #303]:

The day of resurrection!
Earth, tell it out abroad;
The passover of gladness,
The passover of God.
From death to life eternal,
From earth unto the sky,
Our Christ hath brought us over,
With hymns of victory.”

“Now let the heavens be joyful!
Let earth the song begin!
Let the round world keep triumph,
And all that is there-in!
Let all things seen and unseen
Their notes in gladness blend,
For Christ the Lord hath risen,
Our joy that hath no end.”

The victory is Jesus’s conquest over death. Through his death, we are given new life in Jesus Christ. We, too, have the victory.

William James captures the mood of Easter in his hymn, “Easter People, Raise Your Voices” [Hymnal, #304]. Consider the words:

“Easter people, raise your voices,
Sounds of heaven in earth should ring.
Christ has brought us heaven’s choices;
Heavenly music, let it ring.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Easter people, let us sing.

Every day to us is Easter,
With its resurrection song.
When in trouble move the faster to our God
Who rights the wrong.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
See the power of heavenly throngs.”

Because Jesus lives, our joy is unending. Our faith is fortified. We are Easter People.

This sentiment is affirmed in Alfred Ashley’s hymn, “He Lives” [Hymnal, #310]:

“I serve a risen Savior,
He’s in the world today;
I know that he is living,
Whatever foes may say.
I see his hand of mercy,
I hear his voice of cheer,
And just the time I need him,
He’s always near.

He lives, he lives,
Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me
Along life’s narrow way.
He lives, He lives,
Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know he lives?
He lives within my heart.

Dear God, we thank you for giving us your son, Jesus. We are so glad that he sacrificed his life for each one of us. His conquest over death is the joy of our salvation. Without any shame, we declare to the world that Jesus arose from the dead and lives within our hearts. We just ask for boldness to witness to the whole world in the name of Jesus. Amen
