A Plea For Peace on Memorial Day

God of grace and peace, give us grace to love those persons with whom we differ, and grant us the courage to live in peace with them. We are blessed to be able to live in a nation where there is relative internal peace, but our world is in turmoil. Forgive us for our failures to receive your grace, and enable us to be instruments of your peace.

As Americans memorialize those men and women who have sacrificed their life for our freedom, we give thanks for their human sacrifice on our behalf. We remember those persons who have suffered injury as a result of war, asking that your healing touch might bring them renewal of mind, body and spirit.

Help us as a nation always to be sensitive to the realities of the global village – hunger, suffering, death, homelessness, and the ravages of war. In the midst of poverty and distress, we want to be beacons of hope and help. Forgive us for our failures to share more abundantly.

We pray for our national and world leaders, asking that you would grant them wisdom to discern what is right, and the courage to do what is good for humankind.

Lord, we desire peace for our world.

We remember Jesus who sacrificed his life for us. We memorialize Jesus each time that we share in the Holy Communion – his body and blood. We thank you for his forgiveness and encouragement.

We thank you for Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen
