A Prayer For America

A Prayer on the National Day of Prayer May 2, 2013

Almighty God, on this National Day of Prayer, we turn to you because you are the “God of our weary years and God of our silent tears.” We give thanks for our home, the United States of America. We acknowledge your abundant love, and the manifold blessings that you have bestowed upon us as a nation among many nations.

We are mindful of the fact that we live in a world gone mad. So much of our existence in America seems to be turned upside down – political fights, economic turmoil, growing poverty, class warfare, a lack of affordable health care, a meaningful immigration policy and numerous other national problems.

Grant us the courage as your pilgrim disciples, to be found guilty of turning the world upside down through our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. God of grace and glory, we need you to lead us by day and by night in all that we do in America as a nation and as individual citizens.

We ask you to raise up leaders who will discern your will, seek your wisdom and follow the light of Christ in every arena of life, especially the Church. In our leading, help us to know that we are never alone. In our following, enable us to know that you are our leader, the great “I AM.”

Lord, please “grant us wisdom, and grant us courage” so that we can live as faithful disciples and courageous prophets “in times like these.” Amen.
